The word "yoga" means "union" in Sanskrit language. Yoga means union of the mind, body and spirit. Yoga originated in
India, it is commonly referred to as "asana” or the body posture/pose. Today, however, the words asana and yoga have become almost synonymous. Yoga is considerd by most of as stretching the body. But in reality it is about creating balance in the body through developing both strength and flexibility. This is done by performing different poses or asanas, each of which has specific physical benefits. The poses can be done quickly in succession, increase stamina and perfect the alignment of the pose. Yoga is an ideal way in which each exercise is done. Anyone can start a yoga practice to develop flexible and strong body. In addition to practicing the poses, yoga may also include instruction on breathing, call and response chanting, meditation, or an inspirational reading.
