AIM:To investigate the
hypoglycemic effect of terpenes of
Fructus Corni(TFC) on animal models of diabetes mellitus.METHODS:The
normal mice received a daily intra-gastric dosage of 100 mg·kg~(-1),50 mg·kg~(-1) and 25 mg·kg~(-1) for 10 days, then the fasting serum glucose(FSG) was detected. The normal mice received the same dose of TFC for 4 days and were given starch(5 g·kg~(-1)) after last administration, then the serum glucose(SG) was detected. The alloxan-induced diabetes mice were given the same dose of TFC for 12 days, the FSG and fasting insulin were detected. The streptozotocin-induced diabetes rats were given intra-gastric TFC at the doses of 60 mg·kg~(-1),30 mg·kg~(-1) and 15 mg·kg~(-1) for 14 days, and the FSG,fasting insulin, glycosylated serum protein and hepatic glycogen were detected.RESULTS: The glucose tolerance at 100 mg·kg~(-1) in normal mice was significantly increased(P<0.01),but no significant decrease of FSG level was observed at all the three doses. It was observable on animals after treatment of all the three doses, that the FSG level decreased significantly(P<0.05)and the fasting insulin level elevated(P<0.05) in alloxan-induced diabetes mice, while FSG level also decreased significantly and the hepatic glycogen content increased in streptozotocin-induced diabetes rats. The doses of 60 mg·kg~(-1) and 30 mg·kg~(-1) could evidently alleviate the level of glycosylated serum protein(P<0.05).CONCLUSION:Terpenes of
Fructus Corni has remarkable
hypoglycemic effect on diabetes animal models.
