AIM:To study the effect of
aqueous extract from
stems and leaves of Salvia mil tiorrhiza
bag.f.
alba on hypoxia tolerance in mice, and evaluate the medicinal val ue of the stems and leaves. METHODS:The experiment was finished in the Comprehensive Laboratory of Pharmac ology,College of Pharmacology,Taishan Medical University from November 2002 to M ay 2003.Eighty mice were divided randomly into six groups and intragastrically a dministered respectively with saline, propranolol and different dosages of aqueo us extract from stems and leaves of Salvia
miltiorrhiza bag.f.alba.The survival time and oxygen consumption were measured in mice. RESULTS:When mice were intragastrically administered with aqueous extract from stems and leaves of Salvia miltiorrhiza bag.f.alba at the dose of 10,20,30,40 g /
kg and propranolol at the dose of 20 mg/kg,the oxygen consumption was reduced r espectively by 5.32%,7.73%,19.64%,20.78%and 22.81%for 0 to 5 minutes and 3. 53%,2.29%,9.35%,11.29%and 16.58%for 5 to 10 minutes. The survival rates of m ice with hypoxia for 25 minutes were 0, 80%,0,0,40%and 40%when receiving sali ne,propranolol of 20 mg/kg and aqueous extract from stems and leaves of Salvia m iltiorrhiza bag.f.alba of 10,20,30 and 40 g/kg.The survival time was prolonged by 48.20%,21.28%and 17.08%in mice with hypoxia of propranolol and aqueous extract from stems and Salvia miltiorrhiza bag.f.alba of 30 and 40 g/kg groups. CONCLUSION:Aqueous extract from stems and leaves of Salvia miltiorrhiza bag.f. alba shows obvious effect in enhancing hypoxia tolerance in mice.
