Objective To determine whether
prescription for
supplementing qi and activating blood circulation could prevent rabbit fed
with high-fat diet from atherosclerosis and the mechanism. Methods Fifty New Zealand rabbits were randomly divided into 4 groups:normal control group, hyperlipidemia control group, traditional medicine prevention group and traditional medicine treatment group. Each group was observed for two months. After treatment, aortic tissue was taken for quantitative estimation of lipid, and serum lipid was detected before and after treatment. Thoracic aorta was prepared for measurement of the aortic plaque area, wall and intima thickness. Results (1)
Prescription for
supplementing qi and activating blood circulation played an important role in lowering blood TC, TG and LDL-C in hyperlipidemia control group, especially in lowering TG(P<0.01). (2)This prescription could inhibit the atherosclerosis formation in hyperlipidemia control group, thus decreased the area and thickness of the intima(P>0.05), but it had no effect on the area of lumen (P<0.05). (3)The aortic intima was full of foam cells in hyperlipidemia control group underscope and plaques were obviously seen, while the extent of lipid aggradation in the arterial wall in treatment group was relatively less severe. Conclusions Prescription for supplementing qi and activating blood circulation can lower serum lipid and inhibit atherosclerosis formation.
