Objective: To investigate therapeatic effects of 2(3)tert butyl 4 hydroxyanisole (BHA) against gastric ulcer induced
by acetic acid in rats. Methods: Chronic gastric ulcer was induced by 50/100 (v/v) acetic acid applied to the lower corpus on the anterior wall for one minute in rats. The rats were randomly divided into 3 groups as follows: BHA group, Omeprazole group and control group. Ulcer index (mm), index for mucosal regeneration (%), and index for decrease in exposed ulcer floor (%) were determined. Results: The ulcer indexes of BHA group and Omeprazole group were (2.98±1.33) mm 2 and (2.71±1.45) mm 2 respectively, which were significantly lower than that of the control (5.86±1.69) mm 2 ( P <0.01). The indexes for mucosa regeneration of BHA group and Omeprazole group were (70.1±7.9)% and (79.0±8.1)% respectively, which were significantly higher than that of the control (54.5±7.3)% ( P <0.001). The indexes for decrease in exposed ulcer floor of BHA group and Omeprazole group were (60.3±13.4)% and (68.2±8.4)%, which were significantly higher than that of the control (46.5±7.9)% ( P <0.05 and P <0.01, respectively). No significant difference was observed between BHA group and Omeprazole group ( P >0.05). Conclusion: These results showed that BHA could promote ulcer healing by acetic acid induced gastric ulcer in rats, and was as effective as Omeprazole. (J Beijing Med Univ, 2000,32:125 127)
