Objective To observe the effects of propofol on Ca 2+ overload and edema extent of brain cortexes after
incomplete cerebral ischemia. Methods 40 Spalgue Dawleg rats were divided into 5 groups:control group;incomplete ischemia 30 min group;infused propofol and incomolete ischemia 30 min group;reperfused 60 min after incomplete ischemia 30 min group;reperfused 60 min after infused propofol and incomplete ischemia 30 min group.\ With clamping bilateral jugular arteries and hypotension(6.67 kPa) to make the incomplete cerebral ischemia.\ Loosening the clamps to reopen the jugular arteries and recovering the arterial blood presure to the level before ischemia to reperfuse the ishemnic brain.\ The cortexes of each rat were taken for measuring the Ca 2+ and water content.\ Results Water and Ca 2+ content in cortexes increased after incomplete cerebral ischemia (P<0.05).\ When reperfused 60 min, water and Ca 2+ content increased further more respectively(P<0.01),propofol was able to prevent from the increasing of water and Ca 2+ in cortexes significantly after incomplete cerebral ischemia respectively.\ Further more the effect of propofol on preventing water increase in cortexes corresponds to its effect on Ca 2+ (r=0.917,P<0.01). Conclusion Propofol has certain protective effect on incomplete cerebral ischemia in rats.\ The mechanism may be related to its effect on preventing the Ca 2+ from overloading in brain cells after brain ischemia.
