any Chinese herbs and their extractshave been proved to be effective
reactiveoxygen metabolites (ROM) scavengers. Inthis study, we investigated the
effect ofSalviae Miltiorrhizae (SM) and Arasaponin(AR) , as ROM scavengers , on
ischemic-reperfusion rat kidney. Wistar
rats wereused. The right kidney was removed ,the
leftrenal pedical was clarnped for I hour, thenthe clamp was released for reperfusion(IR). SM
and AR were respectively injectediv. 10 min before reperfusion in differentgroups. Renal cortex
(RC) SOD , GSHpx ,GSH and GSSG were determined after 15min reperfusion- Serum creatinine
(Scr) wasdetermined after 24 h reperfusion. Kidneyspecimens were examined under light
micro-scope (LM) and electron microscope (EM) .LM and EM showed that SM and AR
couldalleviate greatly the pathological
injury in-duced by ischemia-reperfusion. Elevation ofScr
was significantly reduced than that ofLR rats. The decrease of RC SOD and GSH-px activity
induced by 15 rnin reperfusionwas ameliorated greatly too. However, intreated rats ,RC
GSH was lower than that inIR rats ,redox index was higher than that inLR rats. Our data suggested
that SM andAR had ROM scavenger-like effect. Thusthey could ameliorate
ischernic-reperfusionrenal injury.
