This paper presents the histology
and histochemical study of the liv-er cirrhosis of rats treated by PGR decoction (Paeonia rubra,
Garde-nia jasminoides, Rheum palmatum).Forty-eight wistar rats were divid-ed into three
groups. The liver cirrhosis group (14) was medicatedwith CCl4 and other compound factors(such
as high grease diet andalcohol drink),the treated group(20) was given PGR decoction
throughgastric intubation for forty-one days besides CCl4 and other compoundfactors, while the
control group(14)was administered with normal foodsand water only. From the experimental
result of the treated group displ-ayed the rate of liver cirrhosis was obviously decreased as
comparedwith the liver cirrhosis group(P<0.01).In hepatic lobule the ne-crotic area and the liver
cellular fat droplets decreased.And RNA,gly-cogen, nucleolus increased,and SDH,G-6-Pase
activity increased aswell. According to this observation, it is suggested that the PGR decoc-tion
available can decrease liver cirrhosis caused by CCl4 and other co-mpound factors. Its
machamism may be that the PGR decoction can pre-vent the damage of endoplasmic reticulum,
promote protein synth esisand detoxiation and decrease the damage of mitochondria. And the
heapof the liver cellular fat droplets decrease. Then the liver cellular nec-rosis and
inflammation reaction decrease too. Therefore the formationof fibrolast and collagenous fiber
is decreased, so the liver cirrhosiscan be prevented.
