OBJECTIVE To observe the effect of
Plumula Nelumbinis Nuciferae and neferine on models of experimental diabetes and obesity
made with streptozotocin (STZ) and high carbohydrate and lipid, compared with the effect of metformin. METHOD Using STZ (30 mg/kg, ip) followed by high carbohydrate and lipid food for 8 weeks, the models were made, and the extract of
Plumula Nelumbinis Nuciferae (500 mg, crude drug) and neferine (10 mg/kg) were given for a month. RESULT After Plumula Nelumbinis Nuciferae and neferine were given, the
fasting blood sugar was markedly lower than those in the model group ( P <0.05). The contents of TCHO, TG and LDL-C of Plumula Nelumbinis Nuciferae were markedly lower than those in the model group ( P <0.05, P <0.01). The contents of TCHO and TG of neferine were markedly lower than those in the control group ( P <0.05, P <0.01). CONCLUSION Plumula Nelumbinis Nuciferae and neferine have certain effect in reducing blood sugar and regulating blood lipid of experimental diabetes and obesity.
