Objective\ To investigate the effects of the extract of Cynanchum paniculatum(CP) on the toxicity of the cardiotoxin(CTX)
and neurotoxin(NT) from Naja atra venom.\ Methods\ The cardiotoxic actions of CTX and the detoxificative effects of the extract of CP were investigated in mice by electrocardiogram(ECG) and survival time. The detoxification effects of extracts of CP on NT were detected by the lethality and survival time in mice.\ Results\ After CTX(700 μg/kg) ip, the following ECG changes were observed: S\|T elevated,
atrioventricular blocked and
ventricular premature beat, ventricular tachycardia, ventricular fibrillation and cardiac arrest(CA).\ The extract of CP(10 g/kg, ip) decreased the S\|T elevation of ECG, reduced the episode of CA significantly and prolonged the latency of atrioventricular block(P<0 05); but the extract of CP neither reduced the lethality nor prolonged the survival time of the mice received NT(P>0 05).\ Conclusion\ The extract of CP exhibits detoxication effects on CTX and no effect on the toxicity of NT in mice.
