Hypoglycemic effect of rehmannia glutinosa oligosaccharide in rats with type 2 diabetes

Article Abstract by: TsingHua

Original Author: Chinese Pharmacological Bulletin
Aim To investigate the effect of Rehmannia Glutinosa Oligosaccharide (Ros) on plasma glucose, lipid level, hepatic glycogen
content, plasma insulin level and the influence on the hepatic key enzyme activity of glucose metabolism in type 2 diabetic rats. Methods According to the purpose of the experiment, type 2 diabetic model was induced by both high lipid food and low dose of STZ in rats, which were divided into control group, type 2 diabetic model group, ROS treated group and metformin treated group. Female Wistar rats were used in the experiment, with the number of 6-8 in each group. The positive control group was administered with metformin (200 mg·kg~ -1 ·d~ -1 ,ig). Results The plasma glucose level, plasma lipid level and the activities of glucose-6-phosphatases in the high dose (200 mg·kg~ -1 ·d~ -1 ) ROS treated group were decreased compared with thats of type 2 diabetic model group. On the other hand, the content of hepatic glycogen and plasma insulin level were higher than that of diabetic model group. Conclusion ROS has a significant hypoglycemic effect in type 2 diabetic rats. This effect may be related to the increase of hepatic glycogen level and insulin level and the decrease of activity of glucose-6-phosphatase.
