Objective To evaluate the effects of genistein (Gen) on blood sugar, serum insulin, serum lipid, renal function and kidney
pathology
in diabetic rats. Methods The STZ-induced SD rats were divided into groups of Gen intragastric admistration groups(4 and 8 weeks) and groups without Gen(4 weeks and 8 weeks).Serum glucose, insulin, lipid, renal
function and kidney
pathology were detected or examined. Results The levels of blood sugar,ISI,TC,TG,BUN and Cr in DM rats at eight weeks treatment were 35.2±1.8 mmol/L,-5.83±0.20,2.50±0.61 mmol/L,1.26±0.30 mmol/L,18.4±0.7 mmol/L,70.2±7.8 μmol/L.The levels of blood sugar,ISI,TC,TG,BUN and Cr in DM+Gen rats at eight weeks treatment were 18.8±3.4 mmol/L,-5.27±0.47,1.43±0.19,1.11±0.34 mmol/L,9.97±1.68 mmol/L,51.7±4.5 μmol/L.Gen relieved glomerular hypertrophy and renal tubular distension. Conclusions Gen treatment improves the abnormal carbohydrate and lipid metabolisms, relieves the changes of renal pathology, improves renal function, and delays the progression of diabetic nephropathy.
