【Objective】To study the effects of huang-xiong mixture(HXM) on atherosclerosis induced by cholesterol-rich diet in rats.【Methods】The model group of rats received atherogenic diet and the experiment group received atherogenic diet plus HXM for 45 days.Then serum TG ?TC?LDL and HDL were detected by enzyme method.Aortic and abdominal arteries were taken for histological atherosclerotic pathomorphology evaluation.【Results】Compared with the model group,HXM decreased the levels of serum total cholesterol<((2.69)±0.16) mmol/L vs(5.57±1.24) mmol/L,P<0.01>,but the levels of serum triglycerides were not significantly different from all the groups<(0.81±0.28) mmol/L vs(0.94±0.25) mmol/L,P>0.1>.HXM also decreased the concertrations of serum LDL<(3.25±0.87) mmol/L vs(7.33±1.31) mmol/L,P<0.01> and increased the levels of serum HDL<(0.62±0.19) mmol/L vs (0.42±0.12) mmol/L,P<0.05>.HXM could inhibit the progression of aortic and abdominal arteries intimal plaques and reduced aortic intimal thickening.【Conclusion】HXM has antiatherogenic effects and its anti-atherogenic mechanism might be related to the decrease of serum total cholesterol and LDL and the increase of serum HDL.
