Objective: To investigate the use of antibacterials in pediatric outpatient department(OPD) in Shanghai Songjiang Central
Hospital and evaluate the rationality of drug use. Methods: A total of 3 579
prescriptions in the second weeks of March and April in 2005 in pediatric OPD were randomly examined. The variety, quantity and utilization of antibacterials were statistically analysed. Results: Two thousand six hundred and seventeen prescriptions contained antibacterials, accounting for 73.21% of the total prescriptions. The top 5 places in order of use frequency were cefotaxime sodium, azithromycin, cefaclor, cefazolin sodium and benzylpenicillin. One hundred and seventy cases of combined use of anibacterials made up 6.50% of the total prescriptions.
Drug utilization index(DUI) was ≤1,and thus utilization of drugs was basically rational. Conclusion: The use of antibacterials in pediatric OPD is basically rational, but problems such as too high starting points of drug administration and too large proportion of habitual use of drugs still exist. The propaganda of the principle for the rational administration of antibacterials should be intensified in order to ensure the best drug efficiency in the clinical use of antibacterials.
