Objective To observe the effect of total coumarines from the fruits of Cnidium monnieri(TCFC) on osteoporosis in ovariectomized condition.Methods Forty female SD rats were divided into sham-ovariectomized group (Sham), ovariectomized group(OVX),20 mg/kg TCFC group,1 mg/kg nilestriol group.12 weeks later, body weight, uterus weight,the number of endometrial gland, Ca~(2+), phosphorus, ALP, creatinine, E_2,CT,TGF-β_1, BGP and bone mineral density (BMD) was measured. Then pathomorphology of the tibia of rats was observed. Results There was no significant difference between TCFC group and OVX group in the body weight, uterus weight and the number of endometrial gland(P>0.05).Compared with the group of OVX, in the TCFC group the serum level of phosphorus was lower, Ca~(2+),E_2,CT,TGF-β_1,BGP and BMD were significantly higher (P<0.01 or P<0.05).The bone trabecula was more widened and less broken in TCFC group than that in OVX group. Conclusion TCFC can prevent osteoporosis in overiectomized rats, this may be related with the increasing of E_2,CT TGF-β_1 and BGP.
