Objective To investigate the effects of fruit powder of
Emblica officinalis on the blood lipid and the formation of atherosclerotic
plaque of aorta in rabbits with dietary hypercholesterolemia Methods Twenty Japanese long ear rabbits were assigned to 3 groups: 4 rabbits in control group were fed only with normal diet; 8 rabbits in 'high lipid' group were fed with food contained 0.5% cholesterol and 15% powdered egg. 8 rabbits in '
Emblica officinalis' group were fed with food contained 0.5% cholesterol, 15% powdered egg and fruit powder of Emblica officinalis. The content of serum TC, TG, LDL- C and HDL - C were mensurated on the 0, 6 and 12week. All rabbits were killed after 12 weeks and used to study the atherosclerotic plaque on aorta endothelium with method of image analysis. Results Emblica officinalis reduced by 42% ,29% and 31% the contents of serum TC, TG, and LDL -C, and increase by 33% the contents of serum HDL - C. Emblica officinalis also decreased by 38% the plaque areas. Conclusions Emblica Officinalis can decrease the blood lipid and inhibit the formation of
atherosclerosis of aorta
