AIM:To observe the changes of reticulocyte injury induced by radiation after systemic antioxidants administration in mice, and
investigate the protective effect of antioxidants on haematogenous system from ionizing radiation injuries.METHODS:The experiment was completed in the Academy of Military Medical Sciences from March to June 2004.Adult mice were orally given vitamine C and vitamine E consecutively, and were implemented whole body γ ray radiation followed by drawing blood and the observation on reticulocyte indices.RESULTS:From the observation results of reticulocyte indices,it was found that γ ray radiation resulted in injury to reticulocytes,a great loss of reticulocyte number and dysfunction of reticulocyte of mice, however, administration of vitamine C and vitamine E before radiation exposure could obviously reduce the reticulocyte injury induced by γ ray radiation.CONCLUSION:Such antioxidants as
exogenous vitamins may reduce haematogenous system injury caused by ionizing radiation, and exert obvious radioprotection effect, indicating that the supplement of exogenous vitamins may play an important role in the rehabilitation after radiation injury.
