URPOSE To study effect of improving osteoporosis in ovariectomized rats treated with the Chinese traditional medicines of tonifing the kidney and enriched calcium: Radix Polygoni multiflori, Placenta Hominic and Margarita (HZZ, their dry powders were mired in the ratio of 1∶1∶0.67).METHODS 40 femal rats were ovariectomized with dividing to the groups of HZZ 1 (0.65mg/kg) and 2 (1.3mg/kg), estrogen 1mg/kg and control 1% fibrin solution 1ml/rat. Another 10 femal rats were shamly operated. All of the animals were sacrificed to measure the weight of bone ash and bone calcium, bone density (BMD), bending stress resistance of femur and the area of calcaneum trabecular.RESULTS The index of bone metabolism in ovariectomized group was signficantly decreaased than that in sham operated group. In comparision with ovariectomized group, the content of bone calcium in the HZZ groups was obviously increased (P<0.001), the BMD and hending stress resistance of femur in the HZZ groups was higher, the trabecular area of lumbar and tibia was markedly increased (P<0.001).CONCLUSIONS The HZZ of tonifing kidney and enriched calcium could improve the osteoporosis due to estrogen deficiency.
