In order to study the effects of carbon disu lfide(CS2)on the function of adrenal gland s and the feasibility of its application in biological monitoring, urine and blood leve ls and corticosteroid hormones and their me tabolites and their changes were detected w ith high performance liquid chromatography and radioimmunoassay for the workers expose d to CS2 for long term in a synthetic fibe r works. Results showed that blood and urine levels of corticosteroid hormones and thei r metabolites declined in the workers expos ed to CS2 at the air concentrations in the workplace exceeding the national hygienic standard.Analysis with multiple stepwise r egression revealed that changes in adrenal corticosteroid hormones correlated with CS 2 concentrations in workplace air.It sugges ts that urine levels of corticosteroid horm ones, including free cortisol, cortisone and aldosterone which reflect the functional st atus of adrenal glands, and their metabolite s can be used as indicators for nontraumatic effects in biological monitoring..
