EFFECTS OF TOPICAL PILOCARPINE ON UVEOSCLERAL OUTFLOW IN RABBITS

Article Abstract by: TsingHua

Effects of topical pilocarpine on uveoscleral outnow(Fu) in rabbits are discussed. 1 %pilocarpine(PC) was unilateraly applied
in 5 normal rabbits' eyes. Intraocular pressures(IOP) of bilatera1 eyes were measured before and 1 hour after PC instillation. 0. 1mmol/L fluorecin isothiocyanatebovine serum albumin(FITC-BSA) was Perfused for 30 minutes bilateraly 90 minutes after instillation. Each eye was dissected into anterior uvea, posterior uvea, anterior sclera, posterior sclera, retina and fluid. The amount of FITC-BSA in each tissue was assayed. Fu was obtained according to these amounts. IOPs before and 1 hour after PC instilla tion and Fu of bilatera1 eyes were compared, respec tively. Results: IOP of PC-treated eye was (0. 70±0. 08)kPa 1 hour after instillation. It had a 25 percent decline. The control eye had no significant change on IOP. Fu of PC-treated and control eyes 2hours after instillation was (0. 123 ± 0. 026 ) μl /min and (0. 177 ± 0. 032 ) μl/min, respectively. Signifi cant change existed between bilateral eyes (P <0. 05). Conclusion: 1 % PC can decreased IOP after unilateraly topical application. PC can prevent Fu in rabbits. Decrease of IOP following topical PC is dominated by increasing outflow from anterior path
