Objective:The experiment was designed to toxicicologically evaluate the food safety of Baishouwu( Cynanchum auriculatum
Royle ex Wight ).Method:The acute toxicity test, micronucleus test of bone marrow cell, sperm shape abnormality test in mice and thirty-days-feeding test in rats were performed.Result:All tests yielded negative results. Manifestation of the group with 1/10 of Baishouwu pieces added in feed weight included excitement arised, easy irritation, obvious emaciation, tendency to decrease in body weight, low utilization ratio, and tendency to decreased in thrombocyte on female animals, tendency to increased in AST and ALT levels on male animals. The animals in the group with 1/10. of Baishouwu pieces added in feed weight died in succession and a granular degeneration of liver cells was found. Conclusion:The maximum no-observed-effect level of Baishouwu pieces on mice is 4g·kg 1 . Infering to a human being with body weight of 60kg, the allowed intake quantity of Baishouwu pieces will be 2.4g and that's why it can not be used as food.
