Febrile seizures/convulsions is a common condition encountered in children below five years. It is generally a to and fro motion type(tonic-clonic) of convulsions involving the entire body. It is a benign condition with no permanant neurological sequelae. Family histroy may sometimes be present. How to recognize the condition? A typical febrile seizure occurs between 6m- 5 yrs of age, generalized, a single episode for every bout of fever, rarely lasting for more than 15 min. However, if a child a suffered from an episode certain precautions need to be taken to prevent subsequent attacks. Every time the child gets fever it should be immediately given a dose of paracetamol/acitaminophen and a dose of diazepam appropriate for the child and wipe the entire body with normal room temperature water to bring down the temperature as soon as possible.
