THE HEALING BREATH (Breathing techniques for better health)

Book Abstract by: VijaiKSharma

Original Author: Luis S.R. Vas
Good health is the first and foremost objective of every individual
in this world. But we do not possess good health all the time. We suffer from minor and major ailments, seasonal and/or age related or environment/pollution, infection, allergy related problems. Of course, we want our healing soon. For our curing, we take recourse to treatment, under various systems of medicine, but the natural ways of prevention and cure, are always much better, with no side effects. Breathing is one such method. In its thirteen Chapters, this book discusses various aspects of breathing, from the point of view of our healing. More than 70% of the waste by-products are eliminated, through our breathing and skin, and this has a large impact on our health. However, we should be aware of the ways of controlling breathing, and their benefits.
In the Chapter on Importance of Breathing, the author stresses on correct breathing, as it helps in intake of oxygen (which purifies the blood stream), and exhalation of waste products and toxins. We need healthy breathing through the nose. Deep breathing has many benefits for our health. The Chapter on Safety of Breathing exercises discusses the safety aspects or the precautions, to be taken during the breathing exercises. These include the general principles, patterns of rest between inhalation and exhalation, importance of exhalation in Yoga etc.  The author continues to describe, the techniques and benefits of the various breathing exercises e.g. Breathing exercise for good posture; Alternate Nostril Breathing; Right-Nostril Breathing; The Loud Breathing;  Rhythmic Breathing; Rhythmic Breathing with Visualization; Walking Breathing ; Teeth Hissing; Tongue Hissing; Bellows (Bhastrika); Cleansing Breath (Kapalbhati);  Nasal Snoring (Bhramari); Swooning; Floating; Taoist Relaxation Breathing etc. The Chapter on Meditative Breathing describes, its important aspects including the technique, its working, and the benefits. This is followed by the results of Research from Harvard’s Mind-Body Clinic, which highlights the healing power of meditation. Several benefits of meditation are listed, under the category of physical benefits and psychological benefits. Meditation is found to be helpful for the conditions of drug addiction, prolonging life expectancy, stress control, pain management, cancer and other chronic illnesses, heart disease, high blood pressure, infertility, psoriasis, respiratory crises, premenstrual syndrome, tension headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, ulcers, insomnia, fibromyalgia, depression, panic attacks, handling repressed memories etc.
This book provides Preface, Contents, Glossary, Index, About the book and About the author at appropriate places. It is written in simple language, and explains this subject with the help of explanatory figures. It is considered very useful for all persons, irrespective of their gender, colour, country, caste, status or profession. A must read book.
