What are
fats? Microsoft Encarta (2000) explains that fats are group of naturally occurring organic compounds. They are oily, greasy, or waxy substances that, in their pure state, are normally tasteless, colorless, and odorless. Research devoted to probing heart attacks and other circulatory disorders indicates that some forms of these diseases are caused in part by the excessive consumption of foods high in fats. Studies also demonstrate that the likelihood of heart attack decreases when the intake of saturated fats is reduced. On the other hand, when saturated solid fats are added to the diet, the amount of cholesterol in the blood increases, but when liquid, unsaturated fats or oils replace solid fat, the amount of cholesterol decreases. High cholesterol levels in the blood appear to promote the deposition of hard, fatty materials in the arteries, causing the arteries eventually to clog. When the coronary artery around the heart becomes clogged in this manner, blood supply to the heart is interrupted and a heart attack occurs.
I am a fast food eater honestly; there are instances wherein as I wake up in the morning and I am craving for fries and burgers for
breakfast. And to satisfy my cravings I would ignore my moms’ hot chocolate and home made foods go to the nearest fast food chain in my place and take my breakfast there.. Do you think it is healthful? Of course not, it is just like eating junk foods for breakfast right? But let’s accept it; for sure I am not the only one who could feel this craving most of the time. After watching the film and listening to the comments in the interview I asked myself how come these fast food chains have totally colonized the industry. What’s in it that makes everyone crave for it? The operation of these food chain industries is should be blame. Because of their massive advertisements and unending vision for popularity and success they are becoming stupid and selfish. Why? They are merely focusing on earning money and to become the best competitor among the metropolis without even noticing the harm it could give to the consumers. Another is concern is the popularity of “budget meals” Because there are “value” meals offered people are very much attracted to it. Why not? If you have 100 box you could have cheeseburger, fries, chocolate sunday, and coke…. All in a small amount of money. Unfortunately, because of our economic situation more and more budget meals are acknowledged by the consumers.
Although, fast foods are less expensive than fine dining foods or the more healthful, its risk and negative effect to the
health of the consumer is very high. As what had happened to the experimenter in the film, it is very obvious fast he became ill and lazy. I think, it could be avoided if there are councils and programs that will hinder the vast manipulation of the fast food chains. We need to take some action before we end up looking for no other choice but just to
eat the super size meals.
On the other hand, it should not be blamed only to the public officials or any form of health organization alone. It is our own health and we should be responsible to it. We still have a choice; we could either take healthful foods or remain to be the victims of our own cravings. I want to share what my friend’s comment while we are watching the film. “Eh it’s your choice naman kung kakain ka ng puro fast food lang”. I agree to her, since childhood we are aware of the food pyramid comprising the
grow,
glow, and go foods right? Or even those who are ignorant to it, each of us have an idea to differentiate the good from the
bad foods. And I think we still have a choice which of these foods we really need. So I will end this asking. Arewe only eating foods that our body actually needs or we are only eating foods that our stomach desires???...
