it is one of the congenital
genetic disorder due to a choromozomal anomaly and hence also called trisomy21.This is most commonly because of the
defective seperation of the choromozomes when the ovum is formed in the mother, but may also occur due to defective choromozomes from the father. These children are called as "happy muppets" because they are generally very friendly and jovial. These children have very peculiar facial characteristics called as" mongoloid facies" where in the child has large forehead, mongoloid slant of the eyes,hypertelorism,
short stubby nose, thick lips, protruding thick scrotal tongue,short neck, short stubby fingers, simian
crease, umbalical hernia, saddle toe, canadian crease, cardiovascular, respiratory, G.I anomalies, delayed dentition, infertile reproductively. Child may not have attain development or may have some development, but will definately have some delay. Child needs extra care as these children have a tendency to get injured easily. There is no cure for this
condition however for the subsequent pregnancy, parents can be given genetic counciling to prevent this condition.
