Lemon Grass, a herb, is found both in East and West India. The botanical name of the Lemon Grass found in East India is Cymbopogon flexuous and of that found in West India is Cymbopogon Citratus. The Oil extract of the lemon grass is useful for many purposes. The color of the oil extracted from West Indian lemon grass is generally yellow in color and ranges from yellow to amber and reddish-brown and is heavier than the East Indian lemon grass. Its scent is lemon-grassy. For growing these plants, we need well-drained soil, warm weather and good sunshine. In cold climate, the plant should be kept inside the house. During summer, the water for growing the plant should be sufficient whereas during winter only mild moistening is adequate. One of the methods of growing the lemon grass is place it in a water pot and after the roots grow, it may be planted in the garden. It may also be planted in a big flowerpot. The oil extracted from lemon grass has many uses for curing many ailments, particularly in infectious diseases and fever. It is also useful as an antiseptic. Owing to its antibacterial property, it is also used in hospitals as disinfectant. Its anti-fungal property is useful in the treatment of fungal eye infection. Due to its sedative nature, it has very good effect in the treatment of headaches. It should, however, be diluted before its application as it may cause irritation of the skin and should be avoided for newborn babies whose skin is very delicate. Lemon grass tea is very effective in cold, cough and flu. Lemon grass is also very good for digestion and an upset stomach. It is also known as a very good remedy for gastroenteritis, colitis, diarrhea, colic in infants, arthritic pain, inflammation, rheumatic pain, sprain, tendonitis, backache, bone fracture, athlete foot, depression and bad moods. Lemon grass tea also is useful in problematic menstruation. Studies have also shown that the use of lemon grass also prevents cancer.
