Polio
( poliomyelitis ) is a highly infectious viral disease, which mostly affects the young children. The
virus
is transmitted through contaminated food and water, and grow in number in the intestine, from where it can enter the nervous system. Many infected people have no
symptoms
,but do excrete the virus in their motion, hence transmitting infection to others.Polio (also called poliomelitis ) is a contagious, historically devastating disease that was virtually eliminated from the western hemisphere in the second half of the 20 th century.
Although polio has plagued humans since ancient times, its most extensive outbreak occured in the first half of the 1900s before the vaccination, created by Jonas Salk, became widely available in 1955.
signs and symptoms...polio is a viral illness that,in about 95 per
cent
of
cases
,actually produces no symptoms at all ( called asymptomatic polio ).
In the 4 per cent to the 8 per cent of cases in which there are symptoms (called symptomatic polio),the illness appears in three forms: A mild
form
called abortive polio, A more serious form associated with aseptic meningitis called nonparalytic polio, A severe, debilitating form called paralytic polio.Initial symptoms of polio include fever, fatigue, headche, vomitting, stiffness in the neck, and pain in the limbs. In a small proportion of cases ,the disease causes paralysis, which is often permanent.Polio can only be prevented my
immunisation
.
Poliomyelitis is a virus disease which leads to paralysis of limbs and even kills the child.
Preventive measures can be taken by taking seven doses of polio drops as per child specialists advice (INDIAN ACADEMY OF PAEDIATRICS)it can be prevented ,the doctor suggests. In the pulse polio immunisation (PPI,irrespective of the immunisation status of a child two extra doses are given and this is called as pulse polio because on a single day in the age group of 0 to 5 year, irrespective of immunisation status of the child.
It is the duty of parents of children below five years to take their child for immunisation
