Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a silent killer. It is caused by the formation of a clot in the vein which can lead to pulmonary embolism as the clot travels through the blood vessels to the lungs, it is referred to as Pulmonary Embolism (PE) which may be fatal.Preventing deep vein thrombosis is far easier than treating it after it has occured, Dr V Balaji,senoir consultant for vascular surgery, Appolo Hospitals,says awareness among physicians and patients should be created.
In 1000 adult autopsies, the overall incidence of pulmonary Embolism was 15.9 per cent leading to sudden death . DVT is a common problem with hopitalised patients andaccounts for five to 10 per cent of deaths among them.This incidence can be prevented by using routine preventive measures in patients at risk.
The symptoms are very non -specific and innocuous and often go undetected and no visible symptoms prevail and hence it is also called as silent killer. According to findings from an autopsy-based study on PE among medically ill patients at Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, PE is an important cause of death in patients who died in the emergency ward or the medical wards.
It is also revealed that 80 percent of PE occured among younger population in India.It is difficult to diagnose PE and hence a high degree of suspicion should be maintained and prophylaxis should become a routine to prevent such deaths.
A big clot in lung s blocks,breathlessness results in death which is usually misconstrued as heart attack.Enoxaparin 40 mg available in five molecules and other equivalents may be injected as clot-dissolving agent.All patients irrespective of their affected by DVT or not should be administered blood thinners (anticoagulants),according to dosage daily.
DVT was once considered to be prevailing only in the developed countries
has reached India too.
