Music ‘
can aid stroke recovery’

L
istening to
music in the early stages after a stroke can speed up a patient’s recovery, research suggests. The researchers compared patients who listened to music for a couple of hours a day, with those who listened only to audio books, or nothing at all. Writing in journal Brain, the Finnish team who studied 60 patients said music could be a useful addition to therapy. Music listening should be considered as an additional to other active forms of therapy. It also has the advantage of being cheap and easy to conduct.
Snoring ‘linked to heart disease’

N
ew research suggests there is a strong link between loud snoring and both heart disease and stokes.
Loud snorers are 67% more likely to suffer strokes, the research by Hungarian Scientists reveals. Hungarian scientists did interviews with more than 12,000 patients. They concluded that heavy snorers were significantly more likely to have a heart attack or stroke compared to the rest of the population.
This research adds weight to existing theories about the link between snoring and cardiovascular disease. The researchers say that loud snoring with breathing pauses could be used to help identify people at risk from these diseases.
