Hematospermia means the presence of
blood in the ejaculate. Even though this condition is common, many cases of this is unnoticed because most ejaculations occur intravaginally. This
health condition can occur in any age. Most of them, especially in younger men are benign. Hematospermia which occurs more than 10 episodes or persists more than 2 months requires further examination.
There are several factors that can cause hematospermia :
Prostate : prostate infection, varices, calculi (presence of stone), after prostate
surgery - post-biopsy/resection/brachytherapy, prostate cancer, or cyst of the prostate.
Urethra (tube that drains urine out through penis) : infection, polyps, condylomata, cyst, or stricture of the urethra.
Seminal vesicle (a pair of gland that add fluid & nourish to semen during ejaculation) : cyst or amyloidosis of the seminal vesicle.
Sexually transmitted disease.
Trauma.
Tuberculosis, HIV, or cytomegalovirus infection.
Systemic condition such as hypertension,
liver disease, bleeding problem,etc.
Most of hematospermia cases are associated with inflammatory conditions of the prostate or seminal vesicles. Don't forget to see your doctor, especially if it stays more than 2 months.
