Objectives: The objectives of the study were to clinically evaluate the efficacy of pre-defined homoeopathic medicines in menorrhagia and to identify their reliable indications, frequency of administration and relationship with other medicines.
Methods: The study was undertaken by Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy, at its Clinical Research Unit (H) at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi (U.P.) from 1985 to 2003. One hundred and ninety three cases of Menorrhagia were studied to evaluate the efficacy of homoeopathic medicines, viz. Cinnamonum Q, Erigeron Q, Ficus religiosa Q, Geranium maculatum Q, Thlaspi bursa pastoris Q, Trillium pendulum Q and Ledum palustre 30, 200. The cases studied were of age group 20 - 42 years.
Results: Out of 193 cases, 81 cases improved markedly, 69 cases moderately, 13 cases mildly whereas 30 cases did not improve. Medicines found effective were Cinnamonum Q (n=10), Ficus religiosa Q (n=50), Erigeron Q (n=26), Geranium maculatum Q (n=26), Thlaspi bursa pastoris Q (n=41) and Trillium pendulum Q (n=10). Ledum palustre was prescribed in 30C potency, but did not produce any improvement.
Conclusion: The objectives of the study to evaluate the efficacy of pre-defined homoeopathic medicines and to identify their indications were achieved. The medicines prescribed in mother tincture (Q) were found effective. These medicines have significant role in relieving symptoms of menorrhagia like excessive bleeding, backache, tiredness etc. However, the other objectives which include relationship with other medicines could not be achieved.  For further confirmation of the above findings, a large sample study with well defined protocol is required.
