Contraceptives, Condoms and Aids

Website Review by: sweetjene

Removal of testicles or ovaries is the only guaranteed, permanent contraception method which makes fertilization impossible.
Though sterilization, is considered permanent contraception, it is not forever. A 10-year study conducted of 10,000 women showed a pregnancy in one of fifty. Condoms, diaphragms and intra-uterine devices (IUD), chemical contraceptives including those taken internally and those applied externally are temporary contraceptives. The effectiveness of contraceptives in preventing pregnancy can be measured using method effectiveness or user effectiveness. Method effectiveness measures the number of times pregnancy occurs when the method is used exactly as prescribed. If however one forgets to take one or two pills during the month and then gets pregnant, this would be an example of user effectiveness. Planned Parenthood’s Alan Guttmacher Institute has reported of 10,000 women getting abortions, of which 57.5% were using a contraceptive the month they became pregnant.
Condoms are not at all effective in preventing AIDS. As condoms retain the bulk of the discharge of semen, the rate is cut down. To become infected with any disease two things are important. One is the presence of some of those viruses and the other is the quantity of that agent entering the body. If there are only a few bugs, the body will kill them but if there’s a very heavy dose, the chance for an infection is greater. As such, by cutting down the volume of semen, a condom reduces the chance for AIDS. But AIDS viruses do get through the condom. Moreover, a woman can only become pregnant for 2 to 4 days out of a 30-day month, but can get AIDS 30 days out of a 30-day month. Also, pregnancy only goes one way but AIDS can go both ways. Condoms, even if used properly every time, does not prevent chlamydia, as there is still skin contact around the genital organs, and the infection can spread through sweat and skin contact. It is the main cause for tubal pregnancies and for blockage of the tube resulting in sterility.
As a drug has both legal and illegal function its use cannot be forbidden. The pill, morning-after pill, and IUD has a legal action (contraception, temporary sterilization), even though the other action (abortifacient) is illegal. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has instructed all physicians who insert IUDs to warn women that its use may cause pelvic inflammatory disease and may interfere with future fertility.
Natural Family Planning: An intimate knowledge of the mucous production, body temperature, and other signs and symptoms, helps a woman know her fertile and nonfertile times of the month. Without using pills or artificial means, couples can plan their families by having intercourse when she is (or is not) fertile.
