Banana grows abundantly in tropical countries. It is not only an item of food but also serves as a medicine. Banna has a rare combination of energy value, protein, vitamins, including riboflavin and niacin, phosphorus and iron. The Banana has a high caloric value. One large banna supplies more than 100 calories unlike other fruits. It is richer in solids and lower in water content. It's hig content of easily assimilable sugars makes it a good source of quick energy and provides an excellent means of recovery from tiredness. The minerals in banana are calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, sulphur, iron and copper. It's alkaline ash contributes to the alkalinity of the blood. It contains little of protein and fat but this could be enhanced with the addition of milk. Combination of milk and banana to growing children ia a valuable and rich food. Banana contains vitamins A,B,C,D and E. Owing to its vitamin C content, banana ranks second only to orange as a preventive to 'Scurvy'. Experiments have shown that banana-fed children excel in physical development. Banana helps in keeping oneself young and healthy. Bananas are a first-class energy food and if eaten in large quantities, they furnish enough high grade protein for the needs of the body. It is said that the workers in the Congo rubber forests live for months at a time on banana alone. The fructose of banana, which forms one-fifth of the fruit is assimilated very easily to be transformed into energy. We get an equal quantity of starch in it too. Banana's value for infants lies in its assimilated sugars combined with vitamins and minerals. It's low protein and salt content with its high carbohydrate, make it useful in the diet of patients with the disease of the kidneys. Banana is also useful in the treatment of malnutrition since it ha caloric value added to its vitamin and mineral content. It's soft texture and mildness are of value in the treatment of intestinal disorders. Banana is a good protector of the eyes and a builder of good teeth due to its contents of vitamin A and Calcium in good proportion. Ripe banana is a good food and medicine in ulcerative colitis, dysentry, amoebiasis, etc. It relieves the symptoms and promotes the healing process. It is prescribed in the recovering stage of typhoid fever. On account of its iron content, banana is useful for deficiency of blood. Bananas and milk furnish a simle and effective method for increasing the weight.
