Aromatherapy refers to the
treatment of illness with highly concentrated
oils extracted from
plants. These essential oils or essences contain the substances that give plants or plant parts their
smell. These also possess medicinal properties. Essential oils are produced by tiny glands in the plant parts such as petals, leaves, stem, bark wood etc. Distillation process is
used to extract the pure essential oil. In Aroma therapy, these oils are utilised for massage treatment, inhalation, added to baths or used for compresses. Inhaling is the quickest in action and the smell has been proven to have a sudden effect on the brain. The essential oils also work internally by penetrating the skin and get absorbed into the body fluids.
