LOTUS (Nelumbo nucifera) belonging to the family Nymphaeaceae, is the national flower of India. Plants and plant products of lotus are being used as a part of health care system since ancient times. Ayurvedic texts like Charaka Samhita provide a detailed description on the use of herbal medicine for a variety of ailments. The Sacred Indian Lotus is an aquatic herb with white or red coloured flowers. The seeds of Louts plant are commonly used in folk medicine in the treatment of tissue inflammation, cancer, emesis and given to children as diuretic and refrigerant in skin diseases. The seeds possess antioxidant, antipyretic and anti-fertility properties.
