Fee Refugees: Guardian Weekend!

Article Review   by:SM THOMPSON

Thousands of 18 year olds are planning to study abroad courses are increasingly taught in English with costs
far below the £9,000 at home so reads the headlines in Guardian weekend:

For example the number of British students applying to Dublin's Trinity College has jumped by 2O per cent and at UCD applications from students with British A levels have surged to 37 per cet from 800 to 1,100

The University of Groningen in the Netherlands where many courses are taught in Enlisgh has seen number of British applicants quadruple in the last two years alone - so that sort of information speaks volumes.

But British 18 year olds are fleeing at the prospect of a £50,000 bill for studying at home and find that they can save as much as £25,000 over 3 years by studying abroad as well as enjoyment of life changing experiences.

However in Denmark as well as the Netherlands tuition fees for students from within the EU are zero and its possible to access Dutch state grants worth £90 a month. And Irish Universities such as Trinity College and UDC rank among the top universities in Europe! However they also charge fees! to EU citizens.

So the other day I caught sight of a student here at home in the UK catching a coach to London but he didnt look overburdened with financial worries such as the cost of his studies so perhaps his parents are the ones who are overburdened!

There is much emphasis today on the cost of fees and I know as an experienced retired teacher who was not made redundant either in the UK or aroad that fees are a problem for all of us but then what goes with it is excellent results providng you work hard at study!

The risk to the system of course is great and I suppose those of us who retired early are kept well but there are other factors so its possible to go abroad and perhaps look for quality in education as well as free zones!
