Gingivitis is an inflammation or degeneration of the gums, specifically the gingival tissue, that results most often from
bacterial plaque (microbial colonies on teeth). It may also result from impacted food or from
systemic disorders such as vitamin C deficiency (scurvy) and endocrine disturbances (diabetes mellitus). Gingivitis may progress to periodontitis (pyorrhea), where supporting bone is lost. Prevention and treatment include good oral hygiene and control or correction of local and systemic factors.
