Halitosis means bad bredth or disagreedable odour from mouth or expired air. Odour can be from oral or non oral substances. Also called as fetar oris or foul bredth. It effects a large proportion of population especially those with poor oral hyegiene, mainly containing aggregagted plaque or calculus on their tooth surfaces. It originates within the oral cavity where anaerobic bacteria degrade sulphur containing amino acids to the foul smelling volatile sulphur compounds. these compounds can be hydrogen sulphide and methyl mercaptan. 10-20% Halitosis is from non oral causes. halitosis of oral origin can be due to many reasons like poor oral hyegiene, dental plaque, gingivitis, peridontitis, oral carcinoma, xerostomia etc. odour is formed mostly in sites like dorso posterior tounge where anaerobic bacteria grow most. also can be produced by production of organic acids, ammonia etc. according to studies revealed it is followed that males can smell more of their own bredth than females ie females have a better perception of bad bredth. females are found to be more aware of their oral hyegiene in developed countries and they use mouthwashes etc to fight malodour. even dry mouth can be a factor governing malodour so reduced saliva can cause malodour due to more growt of anaerobic bacteria. mostly it is observed in the morning which is called morning bredth. Halitosis can be controlled if proper oral hyegiene measures are taken, tooth surfaces are kept free of any bacterial adherent matter especially calculus. proper brushing techniques , use of proper brush and a dentrifice( tooth paste etc). A regular and proper dental check up is always recommended. This abstract was checked by WhiteSmoke Solution.
