Acne
Acne vulgaris commonly called as acne or pimple affects almost everyone in sometime of our lifetime. Acne is reportedly
known to cause so many people not only the disorder of skin but also psychological problems like inferiority complex. Yet it is not understood properly.
Acne usually occurs in adolescents towards their puberty. Adult acne and baby acne are also known to occur but by and large acne peaks at age of 18 years. The various grades of acne are mild, moderate and severe. In severe types, acne persists for years causing disfigurement of skin and leading to scarring.
Acne is a disorder of the hair follicles and sebaceous glands. With acne, the sebaceous glands are clogged, which leads to pimples and cysts. Acne is the most common skin disorder that is bothering most of us in teenage. There are many treatments available for acne. Yet very few take a physicians advice on how to treat acne?
There are various grades of acne as follows:
Primary comedones
Inflammatory papules and pustules
Nodules/cysts
Severe scarring
Acne conglobata
There are a number of ways on how to treat acne depending on the type and severity of acne as follows:
Antibacterial effect:
Benzoyl peroxide cleanser
Topical antibiotics (skin) as Cleosin-T
Oral antibiotics (tablet) as tetracycline, doxycycline, erythromycin, minocycline, Isotretinoin (works indirectly)
Anti-inflammatory effect:
intralesional corticosteroids, oral corticosteroids, antibiotics
Normalize the changes in hair follicle:
tretinoins, isotretinoin Retinoids include Tretinoin and Adapalene.
Inhibit sebaceous gland function:
estrogen, oral corticosteroids, isotretinoin, and anti-androgens as spironolactone.
Also radiation is being used to treat acne.
Surgical therapy including laser therapy and laser surgical techniques is available.
Supplements include Brewer’s yeast, zinc, vitamin A, Vitamin B especially B5.
Thus the principle of acne therapies lies on the cause of acne. Once your cause is diagnosed you know how to treat acne.
