Salman writes about how third gender are mistreated in India.
Unlike west, where gay relationships or eunuchs are in; India has literary no place for third gender which is simply ostracised as Hijras.
He also explains how many of them turn up into male prostitutes.
Rushdie explains that third gender lead an organised life, each member is attached to a clan known as Gharana.
Each of this Gharana is led by a guru or Mahaguru.
Rushdie explains that many believe that Gharana is the place to live in.
A disciple must obey his teacher or guide as much he can!
He has to serve him in various capacities. He pays a certain amount to this guru irrespective of his financial conditions.
Often when hard pressed for money, these Hijras are forced to accept life of a male prostitute.
Salman explains words like condoms or AIDS or STD are alien to these hapless creatures as they are not only dependent on their clients, who prefers pleasure without caution but they also have to please their Gurus.
