Melatonin and the Secrets of Sleeping with the lights off

Academic Paper Review   by:vistawacana     Original Author: dr. Egha Zainur Ramadhani

It was narrated that the Prophet said: ''Do not leave a fire in your house when you go to bad". Some people may think it is just a suggestion related to security aspects, as for lighting a fire is dangerous if left to sleep. Does it mean that this recommended advice of the Prophet no longer contextual in the current days?, simply because it is almost no more people in this modern world today sleeping with lighting a fire?.

However, although the objects are different and may be changing, fire can now be as lanterns, or electricity, but the core content and its medical wisdom behind such advice remains the same. Recent discoveries about the immune system reveals this medical wisdom and the SECRET OF NIGHT SLEEPING WITH THE LIGHTS OFF. The answer is there on MELATONIN.

What is melatonin? Whate are the secrets behind that advice to sleep with lights off? And moreover, what does it has to do with melatonin and how?

Melatonin, CANCER Prophylactic and DNA’s DAMAGE

Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland (a gland in the brain). The function of this hormone is one of the immune hormone which is able to fight and prevent a variety of diseases including breast cancer and prostate cancer. This being prophylactic ability is of the inside melatonin’s origin which is a powerful antioxidant. Antioxidant properties of melatonin is able to counteract the DNA’s damage caused by carcinogens attack which worked to cause cancer by attacking DNA. Another important function of melatonin is the holder of the body''s biological clock.

Interestingly, the production of the hormone melatonin is inversely proportional to the sun, which begins at sunset and reached peak production in the mid night (between the 2:00 to 3:00 AM). Maximum production of melatonin hormone is in the dark. Light will make stop production of the hormone melatonin. The hormone melatonin may not function properly within the
body of a person that always sleep at night with the body under exposure to bright light or under exposure to electromagnetic waves such as televisions and computers.

SECRETS OF NIGHT SLEEPING IN THE DARK

It is Joan Robert - a biologist - said that the night sleeping in a dark room is really beneficial for the body. The body can only produce the hormone melatonin when there is no light.

By turning off the lights when you sleep at night, not only saves energy but also improve the health of the body. For this reason, night sleeping while watching television is also very strongly not recommended. The finding also recommends that one should avoid sleeping too late at night.

Other health practitioners, Lynne Eldridge MD who is also the author of the book "Avoiding Cancer One Day At A Time” also wrote blind women 80 percent less likely to develop breast cancer than the average of other women. Presumably the factor is --among others-- a lot of hormone melatonin on the body as a dark vision has made their immun system higher.

The importance of sleep at night with the lights turned off recently also studied by scientists from the UK and Israel.

Researchers found that when a light is turned on at night, it could lead to over-expression of the cells associated with the formation of cancer cells.

Scientists claim if someone woke up at night and the lights on for a few seconds, it can cause biological changes that may lead to cancer.

If in the previous study sleep in the night with bright lights was associated with an increased risk of breast cancer and prostate cancer, a recent study showed short-term exposure of light can also be associated with an increased risk of cancer.

So that, "people who wake up at night are advised not to turn on the lights. It is believed that every time we turn on the artificial light at night will have an impact on the body’s clock, because this is a sensitive mechanism," said Dr. Rachel Ben-Sclomo of the University of Haifa.
