Bell palsy is a
paralysis of the facial muscles that control one side of the face, resulting in sagging of the eyebrow, difficulty
fully closing the eye, and loss of facial creases on the
affected side. The
paralysis is due to an abnormality of unknown cause in the facial nerve. It is frequently heralded by ear pain. Along with the muscular effects, there can be loss of the sense of taste and an effect on hearing. Treatment consists of protecting the affected eye, and steroids may also be beneficial in easing the symptoms. Most patients recover fully within months.
