PARATHYROID
Deficiency of
PARATHYROID hormone (PTH) results in hypocalcemia and neuromuscular hyperexcitability (tetany). This is caused either by accidental
removal or
damage during removal of the thyroid gland or by a form of autoimmune disease.
Hyperparathyroidism increases the rate of bone resorption, resulting in
hypercalcemia. Chronic PTH excess may
cause some osteolytic changes in the skeleton, and the hypercalcemia may lead to deposition of calcium salts in soft tissue such as the kidney, which may cause irreversible damage.
