Frigidity is an obsolete term for several forms of sexual dysfunction in women that precludes sexual gratification through
intercourse. An imprecise term, it has been used to refer both to a total absence of sexual desire and to difficulties in experiencing orgasm during sex. Mental health professionals stopped using the term because of its imprecision and because it was felt to be derogatory to women.
Preferred alternatives to the term frigidity include: hypoactive sexual disorderÑa lack of desire for sex; female sexual arousal disorderÑa lack of physical arousal during sex; and inhibited female orgasmÑpersistent delay or lack of orgasm during sex.
