Seconal, a trademark name for secobarbital sodium, is a fast-acting
drug of the barbiturate group of central nervous system depressants. It produces drowsiness or sleep and is also used as a preanesthetic, for instance, to relax pregnant women during labor. It causes a decrease in physical and mental acuity, and its effect is augmented if it is taken with another depressant drug or alcohol. It may be habit-forming. In the United States, Seconal requires a nonrefillable prescription; possession without one is a criminal offense.
