Tendonitis, or tendinitis, is an
inflammation of the lining of a tendon's sheath and the enclosed tendon. In calcific tendonitis, a common cause of
shoulder pain, calcium
deposits in tendons near the shoulder joint cause secondary inflammation of a nearby fluid-filled sac, called a bursa. The
bursa may rupture and be invaded by an inflammatory
fluid containing insoluble calcium salts, a condition known as bursitis. Surgery for removal of large calcium deposits is required in only a few cases. Drugs are often prescribed for the relief of pain and inflammation of tendonitis.
