Vertigo is a hallucination of spinning, either of oneself or of one's environment, that may be experienced as a
sensation of imminent
loss of consciousness, as a loss of
balance without abnormal sensation, or as a vague lightheadedness. It is a subjective symptom or complaint rather than a
disease, and it can
occur in several physical disorders, including dysfunction of the vestibular
organs of the ear (organs of balance), the brain, eyes, gastrointestinal tract, or other organs. It can also occur in the absence of organic disease, as in hyperventilation brought on by anxiety; as a
result of excessive use of alcohol or drugs; or as a result of motion sickness or fear of heights.
