Voyeurism is the obtaining of
sexual gratification from
viewing others in a state of undress or engaged in sexual acts. Most voyeurs are maleÑhence the term "peeping tom"Ñand are prepared to spend considerable time in the hope of catching someone else unawares.
Voyeurism probably originates as a psychological defense technique against possible negative judgment of one's own sexuality. Taking pleasure in viewing naked bodies or intercourse or in viewing one's sexual partner is not considered voyeurism. It becomes voyeurism only when it is a compulsive need and routinely supplants other available sexual activity.
