A wart is a small growth on the skin, usually measuring 2 to 10 mm (0.08 to 0.4 in) across.
Warts are caused by viruses and affect many people at some
time in their lives. They
occur chiefly on exposed areas of the body such as the hands, fingers, face, scalp, and
soles of the feet. Venereal warts occur on the rectum and vagina. When warts occur in a place subject to pressureÑsuch as plantar warts on the soles of the feetÑthey may become callused and painful. Warts often disappear spontaneously but may return in the same spot at a later time. They can be removed by a physician.
