Fetal Karyotyping is a laboratory method of Fetal tissue analysis indicated in case of an increased risk of aneuploidy. There is direct relationship between aneuploidy and maternal age. Suggestive prenatal screening tests,  history of a previous child with chromosomal anamolies and confirmation of fetal sex in X- linked diseases are the indications for this procedure.
Interpretation of the prenatal cytogenetic results is crucial in the management of such high risk pregnancies. At times, amniocentesis and cordocentesis are required to confirm the diagnosis. Interphase cytogenetics on uncultured cells using in situ hybridization (FISH/Chromosome Painting) is the most recent and promising development. The provisional result is available in 2 days while confirmed result is obtained only after culture is done.
